Why Compass Rose?

You might be wondering "Why Compass Rose?" I'm assuming you already read about me, but if you haven't start here "Meet the Florist".

One of the hardest parts of starting a business for me was the name. It becomes part of your identity and you want it to be meaningful and relevant. You don't want to put all of your energy and passion into something only to have a name that doesn't proudly represent you and your business. So after doing the flowers for my own wedding and deciding to pursue my passion further, I set to work on coming up with my new business name.

My past business name was simple, Owens Floral. This time I wanted something new, symbolic, and modern. One day while staring at a metal compass on our wall, I thought about how my family adopted the compass as our unofficial (but official) family symbol. My mom observed that the outer circular ring looks like an “O”, and then added with the directions, “W”- West, “E”-East, “N”-North, “S”- South, it spells OWENS!

My husband looked at me staring at the wall and asked if I knew what that symbol was called. "It's a compass", I confidently replied. "Yes but the official name is 'Compass Rose'". Instantly the lightbulb went off as we repeated the name back and forth to each other, and "Compass Rose Floral Design" was born.

The compass rose fits so well because I also have a passion for the outdoors and traveling to cool cities, botanical gardens, and especially our great national parks. My Mom assured me that no matter what direction I traveled, or wherever life would take me, I’ll always be grounded and home in Owens. Although married now, and also proudly representing the Zerby last name, I’ll always have my family roots.
